I am a Psychology teacher for a high school in rural Pender County, North Carolina.
We currently have 51% of our students receiving free lunch and 6.75% are English
Limited. Being a poor county, with an increasing population, our funds are
extremely limited. In addition, we have a very diverse social and economic pool of students.
Every year when my psychology class reaches the topic of mental illnesses we take the time to study it in-depth. Students are genuinely interested in learning more about mental illnesses, and I find this topic ideal for broadening their perspectives with compassion and social understanding. The centerpiece of our studies is a weeklong research project. Each student researches one mental illness and then develops a project centering on their research. Two days of their research time is spent in the library.
However, our library lacks enough resources to answer all of my students' questions. I would like to continue this particular research project due to the overwhelmingly positive response I have had with past classes. In order to do so, however, we will need more books for the research project (books used in the past are either lost, stolen, and/or out of date). The following books would greatly increase the resources available for my students to study mental illnesses:
Hello to All That,
Sometimes I Act Crazy : Living with Borderline Personality Disorder,
Misdiagnosis And Dual Diagnoses Of Gifted Children And Adults: Adhd, Bipolar, Ocd, Asperger's, Depression, And Other Disorders,
An Unquiet Mind,
Acquainted With the Night : A Parent's Quest to Understand Depression and Bipolar Disorder in His Children,
DSM-IV Diagnosis in the Schools, Revised Edition (Guilford School Practitioner Series).
These books will be used by a class of 25 students this year, with additional students benefiting by using them in future classes.
