Students Seeking Knowledge From Invisible Man

My students need a variety of novels that are "of literary merit" according to the AP College Board requirements, and 30 copies of Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison would help them expand their literary knowledge.

My Students

"This book changed my life!"

When a teacher can provide books that allow students to discover part of themselves, it is one of the greatest joys of the profession.

My students are a uniquely diverse group of juniors and seniors who have come together to study AP English Literature. Any student that wants a literary challenge is welcome regardless of their grades or tests scores.

My school is a Title I school. Nearly 70% of our students receive free or reduced lunch, and over 60% of my AP students receive the same services. Many of my students are from immigrant families or speak a second language; they hail from Britain, Germany, Mexico, Brazil, Columbia, Venezuela, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guyana, India, and China just to name a few. This brings a beautiful diversity of thoughts and experiences to our classroom that enhances every piece of classic literature we read.

My Project

Literature seems to be a dying form of art, yet the students who choose to challenge themselves with my AP Literature course embrace all that literature teaches. With the addition of 30 copies of Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison to our classroom library, my students can can experience history, literary techniques, and, perhaps more importantly, empathy for those who paved the way for the opportunities they reap today.

The novel Invisible Man will transport my students into the world of a man who is not literally invisible, but as invisible as an African American can be in the 1920s and 1930s.

Ellison's use of existentialism - questioning the meaning of life, particularly through the black experience of prejudice in America - will help prepare my students for the historical and social debate that awaits them in their college studies.

With a class set of this award-winning novel, my students will be better prepared for the AP English Literature and Composition exam, as this book has been used on the test nearly 25 times since the year 1977. This classic will not only fill my students' curriculum requirements, it will also allow them to experience the time period through the eyes of someone who lived through the hardships and triumphs of the time.
