My students need safe, comfortable stools to sit on. Many of the 20-year-old stools in our room are falling apart and have always been too tall for my kindergarten and first-grade students.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are a 100% Title I school where all students receive free breakfast and lunch. Even given the disadvantages and challenges my students face daily, most come to school excited and ready to learn!
Most students want to be in school because of their desire to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.
However, we also have a concerning amount of students with anger issues and mental health challenges due to living in high stress situations. At our school we strive to create a safe, inviting learning environment where we can teach our students the skills they will need to grow and learn academically, socially, and emotionally.
My Project
Students that are comfortable and able to move easily are better able to focus and learn. New shorter, lighter stools will be safer for students ages 5 up to 12 and easier to move out and put away without tipping over.
The seating in our art room has not been replaced since the room was added as an addition to the school over 20 years ago.
The seating was chosen for us and has always been too tall, as well as heavy and unbalanced, causing loud stools falling over. Most are broken, chipped, or missing, and we play move the seats with each new class that enters.
Wobble stools and the soft backed stool will allow for students who need to move to do so safely, without disrupting instruction by leaning back on two legs, which I have to stop and address out of safety concerns. We will also be able to lower the tables, which are also becoming a bit wiggly, especially since they have to be at the highest setting. Hopefully lowering them will make them tighten up.
