Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The excitement of "Fun Friday" isn't just once a week...it's every day. My students continue to request more STEAM such as science and art experiments and as well as computer activities. Many of our new resources are used on a daily basis during free choice time.
My students come to school with many concerns outside of their control, so in our classroom we utilize teamwork and social skills to the fullest potential.
Our school is a small school making a big difference for students who have been placed in our building for various personal or private reasons. Many of them do not have "typical" experiences prior to entering the school system. Here, they receive additional resources and opportunities such as a smaller class size, as well as strategies for social and emotional learning in addition to academic skills.
My Project
My students like to borrow a DS at the same time as their friend(s) and then they try to play the same game (Mario Kart). Or, a friend watches them play a game. They are getting in their social skills...taking turns, asking for help, working as a team, getting exposed to the occasional "haha, my guy passed your guy" frustrations. It's one of my favorite times to remind them about the Zones of Regulation (social skills) and their individual target skills they're working on for behavior.
They've made leaps and bounds in this area thanks to end-of-day "playing", even if it's on their terms...aka...electronics.
Our school owns four of these devices, but they are shared with other homeroom classes and we only get access to these devices about once a week. The students get super excited about every DonorsChoose.org project that we have completed and this is THEIR request. "Can you ask your friends to get a DS so we could always have one in the room?" So, here I am, hoping that this project funds because they work hard for hours and want to play electronics for the last few minutes of their school day. During the school day, students earn positive points for academic and behavior goal achievements. At the end of the day, they make purchases or rentals based on the points they have. This will be one of their choices that they have access to based on this classroom economy. The seemingly non-academic devices are also used as inspiration for writing journals. Not only are their illustrations more detailed when they draw a scene from the game, but their specific details are more vibrant and easily thought of thanks to these wonderful electronics.
