My Students

Our students come to school every day (with 98.4% attendance) in a diverse, low-income, urban community. They are 68% Asian, 14% African-American, 11% Latino, 6% Caucasian and 1% multiracial.

Our school community supports the whole student, academically, physically and emotionally.

By meeting the needs of our students on many levels, we help them to find success in school and in their community. It is a collective effort to help each of our students become the best people they can be. We try to create a foundation that they will take with them through their education and beyond.

My Project

While my classroom library is quite large, I realize that it is not culturally responsive to all the students sitting in front of me. I want to bring more books to my classroom that have main characters and heroes who are Asian, African American and Latino like so many of them are.

These books will help my culturally diverse students learn that heroes and main characters come from all cultures and backgrounds.

I have selected books that have strong characters who are Chinese, African American and Latino, who are boys and girls, who share the same challenges and triumphs as my students. Perhaps my reluctant readers will start to enjoy reading and my stellar readers will expand their knowledge of their own and other cultures.
