Students, Play with Fire

My students need a Kindle Fire to bring books to life. I believe the technology will motivate reluctant readers to try reading again.

My Students

When I get a little money I buy books; and if any is left, I buy food and clothes. - Desiderius Erasmus Reading a good book is like feasting on an amazing meal. I want my students to have that same desire for reading that I do.

My students are spirited, fearless, adventurous, and have have amazing hearts.

Many are dreaming of going to universities and following their dreams. They jump at any opportunity to use technology in the classroom and ask millions of questions about computers, iPads, and my Kindle. It is unfortunate that many of my students do not have computers at home and their exposure to technology is limited to the time they are in my classroom. It is also unfortunate that our school library is not being utilized because budget cuts have taken away our librarian and I can't remember the last time we had new books in there. We lack current favorites such as Diary of Wimpy Kid. I hope by bringing a Kindle Fire into the classroom, my students will have the same opportunities and experiences as those who live in more affluent neighborhoods.

My Project

Imagine a classroom where students are begging to read and books are devoured like hot Cheetos at recess. Imagine a student in a rough neighborhood drowning out the sounds of police sirens by being so entranced in their novel that they are transported to a different time and place.

Your donation could be the one that makes a reluctant reader into an avid one.

You could create a classroom in which an entire library is stored on one tablet. The result could be a child that learns to love books as much as a video game. That passion for reading could be what propels this student to be a doctor, a lawyer, a teacher, or the next Steve Jobs or Bill Gates.
