Students on the road to good character...

My students need 1 Polaroid Instant Mobile Printer, as well as 10 packs (30 sheets per pack) of ZINK Polaroid Photo Paper.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Manifold's classroom raised $355

Students living in today’s society are now, more than ever, in need of instruction in character education. Today’s students NEED to be guided to encourage others to display positive and appropriate character traits so that they can be successful in and out of the classroom today in their futures! Some of my students often struggle to maintain a positive attitude towards learning because of negative peer pressure, coupled with a lack of parental support. In addition, oftentimes my students enter my 4th grade classroom with little to no clear idea of what it means to truly respect themselves or others, how to communicate and cooperate effectively with others, and how to interact with others in a positive, supportive way. At these ages (9-11), my students are beginning to become severely influenced by their peers’ actions, judgments, ideas, and attitudes. Unfortunately, the high majority of students at this age fall into the role of followers, rather than leaders. Oftentimes, it is evident that my students are embarrassed by their attempts to do the right thing, when the "leaders" around them are displaying negative character traits such as dishonesty, disrespect, and negativity. Outcast students are often bullied emotionally; directly or subtly. These students are frequently left to feel isolated, afraid to be themselves and an important part of the classroom community. These students are sometimes unwilling to attempt their best work at school, and certainly not motivated to come to school to learn each day. After speaking at length with the parents of two of my students who were socially isolated during the 2008-2009 school year, I knew I had to do something to change this. Fully aware of the restrictive curriculum and timelines that I am forced to follow, I sadly accepted the fact that I would not be able to embed quality character education into each school day with the volume that I desired. As a result, I began to search for small ways in which I could infuse character education into my classroom each and every day. Three weeks into the school year, after implementing just a few daily routines centered around character education, I have seen major changes in the way that my students treat each other, interact with each other, and support one other as compared to the previous school year, in which I had the same group of students. I have been making time to read children’s literature that addresses issues of character, but I think the action that affected my students the most was my implementation of “The Road to Good Character”. It started out as a simple poster with a picture of a road along with a small list of positive character traits, such as perseverance, kindness, encouragement, thankfulness, etc. I then constructed a road using black and yellow construction paper that winds up a narrow space beside one of my chalkboards, traveling towards the ceiling. I planned to introduce a new character trait each week. The trait would be defined, posted, discussed, practiced, and sought after. In addition, I made “Good Character Nomination Forms” on which the students could nominate each other when they witnessed another displaying the week’s particular trait, or a trait from a previous week. On these forms, they would identify themselves along with the student they were nominating, and provide a written description of what the student nominee did to display the trait. There is also a space on the nomination form for a photograph of the student nominee with the student who nominated them. I placed a basket of the nomination forms on a table in the classroom, and students were soon going out of their way to display the trait of the week and nominate another for displaying the trait. The students immediately began to show happiness and support for those who had “made the road to good character. I would like to continue this program for the rest of the school year, as well as for years to come. My students do have access to a digital camera in the classroom, therefore they can take the initiative to “catch” others showing the positive traits, but their actions stop there, as I have to constantly take the digital camera to my home to print the pictures, which takes a lot of time and money for ink and photo paper. With your help, I can give my students these important opportunities. I’ve seen first hand the effects of little to no character education in our schools. It is very dangerous, and coupled with the frequent lack of parental support and guidance, our youth is beginning to become severely affected. These children are going to be our future leaders and caretakers! Please help my students as they travel on the “Road to Good Character!”
