it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school houses the highest needs special needs students and, oftentimes, these students also fall into the highest needs economically disadvantaged category. Over 90% of my students fall into this category. We are a 12-month program, where students attend year-round to receive services.
My students are part of the largest school district in the country (the NYC DOE) and fall into the highest needs category.
For years, I have poured my own money into my classroom, but it is not enough! I have reached out to local community members and collected used and refurbished computers, but they do not meet the requirements to run modern software.
I teach grades K-8 and a total of 9 classes, a daily lunch club, and a weekly positive behavior intervention club as a reward for students. All students would have access to these resources! That is why today, I am reaching out for global support to help our highest needs students get an equal chance to succeed! We truly need your assistance to level the playing field. Many students come from homes that do not have Internet access or technology, further increasing the achievement gap.
My Project
I am always trying to think of new and exciting ways to get students motivated about education through technology! Health and nutrition is something that is very important to me and is an area that is not covered well enough at early ages. I would like to teach my students using hands-on, interactive online activities that get them engaged in learning about health and wellness through instructional STEM technology.
My plan is to work with my youngest K-2 students to engage them in hands-on learning about wellness via instructional technology.
Recently, my students and I got a new Microsoft Surface Go. The incredible thing about the Surface line of products is the lightweight nature and artistic elements it introduces. With the under 2 lb total weight, I can travel between our 5-site school to share these resources with all of my students and other educators. I want to see students drawing, sketching, circling and using the Surface Go and having their work mirrored for other students to see. I want to give them a sense of ownership in seeing their work come to life. They will complete whole-class lessons on wellness by actively using the Surface.
The dock allows the Surface to connect to a SmartBoard or monitor so students can see on a larger display. The pen will allow my students to illustrate on the Surface Go while peers observe their work on the Smart Board. The SD card will allow my students to create and store content without worrying about running out of space. The mouse will allow students to control the Surface even from their desk wirelessly! I truly believe the hands-on and artistic nature of the Surface will make differentiating instruction and engaging my students about health and wellness a HUGE success! #TechForGood
