Students Need Exciting Science Books!

My Students

My students cannot afford to buy books, nor can the school afford to equip the school library or my classroom library with up-to-date books and materials. I teach a science-based English class that is woefully short of engaging and interesting reading material to cover the breadth of topics I teach.

My students live in a highly impoverished area on a reservation in Washington State.

Most don't own computers or televisions and the libraries in the local area are small and poorly funded. The school these students go to is equally strapped for cash, but teachers have been finding creative ways to engage students in engaging project-based learning curriculum.

My Project

This book order (one of many) will help build a classroom library for my students. The books requested cover three of the content themes I teach: Evolution, Genetics/Racism, and Influenza/Epidemics. The intent with building this library is to move away from using a single class text that all students read to a exploration inquiry model where the students read multiple books, sharing what they've learned with each other, engaging in different perspectives around key issues, and collaborating to build a classroom culture of inquiry and greater understanding over the issue. With the resources we currently have, I am unable to differentiate reading instruction to my students, which hurts both advanced and struggling readers. By building a library, I hope to close the achievement gap between my students while engaging them all in the essential learning.

My students struggle daily with finding relevancy in reading.

By giving them more variety, you will give them more choice. By giving them choice, you will help me engage them in a fantastic learning environment. With choice and engagement, they can become empowered learners, not just now but for the rest of their lives.
