My Students
When my students enjoy the books they are reading, the results are simply magical. The conversation they have, the debates that are started, and the questions asked are nothing short of excellent.
Students at this school come from all backgrounds and walks of life, with almost 80% of students identified as high-needs, 50% as English language learners, and 16% as having a disability that affects their learning.
While my students come from challenging backgrounds, they put in hard work every day in pursuit of academic excellence.
My Project
Around the age of 12 and 13, young teens begin to lose interest in reading. According to The New Yorker, teenage students often see reading at school and reading for pleasure as separate entities, that do not often cross paths. This is often because the books prescribed in school curriculums are simply not interesting to them.
The books in this project are award-winning high-interest books for teens to encourage their independent reading habits in school.
Each book is selected because it is highly captivating, has rich language, and is age-appropriate for the student population. With these books, students will build their desire to read independently for enjoyment and to engage critically with the material.
