My Students

I teach at a richly diverse school in Portland, Maine. Over 40% of students at my school are English Language Learners; they represent 15+ different home languages and countries. Many of my students are refugees, forced to flee their home countries due to life-threatening conditions such as extreme violence, poverty, hunger, and natural disasters.

Despite the obstacles, my students come to school every day brimming with optimism and resilience.

They have big dreams for themselves and for their families and need books and materials to help meet them. Unfortunately, many of these students live in "book deserts," and do not have access to reading materials outside of the school day. Our goal is to provide access to books and educational opportunities both at school AND beyond it. In order for our students to succeed, their learning can not stop at 3 p.m.

My Project

The research is clear: In order to become proficient readers, students need to spend lots of time reading. According to the National Reading Panel, "the more children read, the better their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension" (2000). In order to do this, students need to be reading not just during the school day, but also at home.

Unfortunately, for too many of my students, reading at home is not possible simply because students do not have access to books.

Many of my students have little to no access to books in their homes and neighborhoods. Too often, the books that are available are outdated, worn out and/or beyond students’ reading levels.

But we can fix this. Through this grant, all second grade students will receive a brand-new copy of a beloved book to begin or grow their home libraries. Through this exciting project, we can help ensure that students have the tools they need to become successful, lifelong readers.
