Students Mine their way to Environmental Knowledge of Minerals!

My students need a mobile field trip in which they can mine for rocks and minerals and learn to use hardness and streak tests in order to identify them.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Pipkorn's classroom raised $579

This project is fully funded

My Students

My students are creative, active, and have positive attitudes towards learning! Our class is a mixture of regular education and gifted students, most who have an interest in STEM based activities.

They enjoy learning and incorporating a variety of hands on STEM based activities to enhance their understanding of how the world works.

Each child brings a diverse background to the group. We are a school in a district that is economically disadvantaged with a very diverse group of students who truly enjoy coming to school every day.

My Project

This mobile field trip allows for hands on experience with mining for rocks and minerals.

Students will actually mine gems and minerals and learn to identify them using hardness and streak tests!

The program begins with a video which presents all of the minerals the students can find in our mine and instruct them as to what they will be doing during the mobile gem mining experience. The video also shows how rocks and minerals are formed and explains the difference between rocks and minerals.

The students come out to the mine for a 30 minute mining session. During the session, each student receives a mining box filled with ore from the Brazilian gem mines. They sluice their boxes in the flowing water in our flumes to uncover their collections. Next, the great experience of discovery happens as they pick the stones from the mining ore.

Each student is guaranteed to find a collection containing, amethyst, garnet, tiger's eye, pyrite (fool's gold), petrified wood, hematite, moonstone, moss agate, calcite, fluorite, pumice, quartz crystal, snow quartz, rose quartz, apatite, feldspar, mica and limestone. All of the primary Benchmark contents required by the state of Florida and many more gems, rocks, minerals and fossils.

After the mining the students watch a follow-up video which explains what the physical properties are and we them how to perform a streak and hardness test in order to do proper identification.

Florida does not have a wide variety of rocks and minerals or mountains in which to learn about the environmental impact of geology. This program will allow them to experience what it is like to mine in an interactive way. This knowledge will build their knowledge of the importance of protecting our Earth and her precious natural resources.
