My students need 34 newly published and newer copies of books for our school library. The students get extremely excited when new books are on display ready to read.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We love to read! However, our library budget had to be cut drastically which means less new books for the students to check out from the library. High interest children's books keep kids reading and that is a beautiful thing!
The elementary school where I am the librarian is in a high-crime, high-poverty area.
It is an urban school district in Pennsylvania with close to 100% free and reduced price lunch. We strive to make our school the best place for our students, a place of joy, relaxation, comfort, and of course, the best learning around.
My Project
As a librarian and teacher, I love the looks on my students' faces when the latest shipment of new books comes in. They are eager to hear my book talks and cannot wait to check them out. Each student will be required this year to check out more than in years past due to a new literacy initiative we are implementing. The Daily 5 is a reading structure that allows 2 hours of authentic reading per day during the school day. By authentic, I mean "real" books, not just the large volume anthology that contains excerpts of books and low-interest stories. By getting more "real" library books, the students will have a wider variety of authentic literature that is sure to please their tastes, interests, and inquiring minds.
Unfortunately, the library budget to purchase new books this year for the students has been cut down by about 50%.
Our new literacy initiative The Daily 5 requires that each student have several books available to them of their own choosing. Providing my elementary students with more library books can ensure that they have more books available to them that are on their reading level and of interest to them. For these urban children, reading is a valuable escape and a valuable learning tool.
