My Principles of Health Science and Medical Terminology students are part of our CTE Sports Medicine Signature Academy here in Washoe County in Sparks, Nevada. The standards for Principles of Health Science include certifying the students in Basic Life Support.
New manikins with built in feedback would bring our equipment up to standard for certification.
Between 140 -175 Health Science students and 35-70 Medical terminology students get certification from American Heart Association each year in our program. Currently, we have manikins that are 8 years old and are not in compliance for certification purposes.
Once certified, the students become more employable for jobs as well as sharing their knowledge with others. Each year all of my students teach over 400 students in the school hands-only CPR and the importance of providing chest compressions. They also go out into the community and talk to middle school students about how to respond in emergency situations.
