Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading these books together as a class has been amazingly successful and really pushed my students as learners. My students are excited to ready to learn, but they need the books to read!

We are an incredibly diverse urban school that struggles to get books that we need to help our kids to learn.

I have 90 students in the 8th grade who come from more than 17 countries with more than 10 different first languages spoken, and 78% of our students are entitled to free lunches.

My Project

Reading these books together as a class has been amazingly successful and really pushed my students as learners. While 1984 isn't a book that my students would be able to tackle independently, as a class we are able to delve into challenging reads like this. With the books, teacher's guide and post-its, we will be able to expand and share our understanding of this difficult genre.

The most valuable thing I can teach a child is to love reading.

So many of our children struggle to read or don't read at all. I have seen these same students excited about class novels and discussing them with their friends in the hallways - exactly the kinds of discussion that I would hope they would engage in.
