Have you had to wait 5 minutes or longer for a page to open? Or not had the appropriate plug-ins to view a page? That happens to us daily. With an iPad in the classroom, we can attend virtual field trips, and access any educational resources on the web.
We are a small to medium sized elementary school in a large urban school district.
Most of the funding for technology is given to the high schools or middle schools. What's left filters down to the elementary schools. My students are excited about learning and I want to provide experiences that only current technology will allow.
My Project
With an iPad connected to a projector, I can teach from anywhere is the classroom. The class can access websites for virtual field trips allowing us to go to places we wouldn't normally be able to go to. From the west coast, we can visit colonies on the east coast, as well as travel along the trail with Lewis and Clark. We can use apps such as Science 360 to give students a very visual look into the world of science. With hundreds of images and videos from the National Science Foundation, this app helps teach students about various scientific topics.
When the iPad is set up as a student center, the student can work on individual needs spanning everything from practicing math facts to gathering information for an independent study project.
When students have access to the most current technology available, the possibilities are limitless.
Students are allowed to broaden their horizons and open their minds to new possibilities, and they might realize that we are limited only by our own minds, our own imaginations, and our own creativity.
