My Students

Our students are joyful, hard-working and inspirational in their stamina and resilience. They also make our school the most diverse school in the district! For example, in one classroom, there can be up to ten different languages represented. Because of where we are located, we also have a growing number of students who are in transitional housing. Whatever the challenge, our students are constantly learning from each other and inspiring one another through their differences and similarities.

The diversity of our students sets our school apart from others and has created an amazing school community!

This unique quality has also presented challenges in differentiating our instruction; specifically in reading and language arts. This only emboldens our kids to strive for more while instilling a deeper level of understanding for other's struggles.

My Project

My students are addicted to technology and it has infiltrated our classroom community like a bad case of the flu! I want to bring good, old-fashioned board games as well as skills-based games such as magnetic dartboards into our classroom so my kids can take time to think, wonder, communicate, and create ideas together. My students are amazing thinkers and doers and when they are outside, their curiosity and creativity is endless. They can play tag for hours and finding an insect of any kind in the playground stops everyone in their tracks, causing an excited huddle around the insect. However, when indoors, video games and music videos dominate their conversations and top their wish list for rainy day games and Fun Friday activities. I want to change that with board games!

I believe kids often forget what they're capable of (or even tolerant of) when faced with the prospect or reality of no technology.

And if not provided with an alternative, most, I’ve experienced, will choose that video game or YouTube video to entertain them. Board games are tried and true alternatives to technology! Some of the games, such as Jenga, Clue, and Battleship have demonstrated for decades, that they foster key skills such as strategizing, risk taking, the exchange of ideas, and grit – skills that are an important part of their social and intellectual development. Most of all, these board and skill games are simply fun! I believe that these classroom games will create a very new and exciting opportunity for my students – one that doesn’t include a screen!
