My Students
I teach 7th and 8th grade reading to a great group of kids. When my students walk in the room, I feel happy even if I've been having a challenging day. They are eager, funny, curious, and inspiring.
Despite their learning disabilities, the majority persevere and improve their reading by multiple grade levels.
There is a true sense of community and even family in our classroom. These kids love to help one another and they love to play teacher. I often hand the "chalk" over to my students and have them lead the class in their areas of expertise. Our data collection is showing that the majority of these students need more help with reading fluency. I am excited to see what happens when students help students in this quest.
My Project
My plan is to have students work in small groups helping to improve one another's fluency. We've spent two weeks in the training phase where students have learned what accuracy and rate mean in terms of reading fluency. They've practiced marking errors and calculating rate and accuracy. They are ready to go.
The clipboards, dry erase boards, organizer and batteries are integral to student success in their quest for fluency.
The clipboards provide the flexibility to sit in small groups, in different areas, including the outdoors. Using dry erase pens, students will track and mark their fellow students' errors. The batteries will be used to run digital timers which students will be calculating one another's reading rate. Finally, as part of their reward system, they can play ping-pong in their small groups after completing one round of timed readings, hence the set of ping-pong paddles!
