My students need taste papers, the human genetics tasting kit, glassware, plasticware, coffee filters, wooden stakes, soap, zip bags, and a storage bin to create innovative homework kits.
The students in my classroom come from greatly varying socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of my students are English Language Learners or receive services under an IEP or 504 plan. I am proud to work at a school where students of all backgrounds come together to learn, and my goal is to give each student equal footing by giving each student what he or she needs to succeed. Having a classroom filled with enriching instructional resources will excite and inspire my students; many of whom are striving for STEM careers or to become scientifically literate citizens.
My Project
The students in my class spend the first semester understanding the many facets of the molecule that unites us all: Our DNA. By focusing on these elements of genetics, students learn to appreciate the ways in which we are both diverse and similar to every person on earth, especially when it comes to our families.
Students love learning about genetics and why they inherit some traits but not others.
With these supplies, students will have rotating access to checkout the genetic kits to take home to complete an assignment to teach their family members about genetics. This will supply them with necessary items, such as PTC strips and genetics of taste kit, to test their family members for genetic traits. The plastic, glassware and various other supplies (soap, baggies, filters, pipettes, and stakes) will be used to create strawberry DNA extraction kits that students will use to deepen their assignment on teaching family about genetics. These supplies allow you to extract DNA from a regular store-bought strawberry! The various office supplies (paper, sheet protectors) will house assignment instructions. The tote will store all of the homework kit and DNA extraction supplies.
