My Students
I have students who love to use technology, such as using a laptop or an iPad to read on Epic, to play math games, and to solve math word problems on MobyMax and Zearn. However, my students do not have enough math games and math manipulatives at home. Using place value disks, dice, and counters to play games are great tools to keep my students engaged and motivated to do math and to show their math thinking despite being at home.
My K-2 class consists of general education, special education, and ESL learners who are motivated and curious to learn when they are engaged in real and authentic hands-on experiences.
Playing math games supports our Title I school belief that our diverse population learning needs must be met in a variety of ways. When my students play math games, they also focus better and perform higher on school examinations.
My Project
You will be helping my students learn at home in variety of ways by giving them access to different math games that are significant for students' learning in a special needs classroom in grades K-2. Students in K-2 love to learn by playing games.
In grades K-2, it is also important for students to learn doing hands-on activities to gain a deeper understanding of math concepts.
For instance, when students are learning addition and subtraction, they need to be able to see and feel the counters, dice, and place value disks to move them around and count. Therefore, with this project, I will be able to purchase cut-out math manipulatives that students can use at home to create and play math games.
Lastly, students are truly engaged and more successful in math when they are able to play games, along with learning and collaborating with their peers.
