This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I sit in class with a pencil in my hand taking notes while the teacher explains how to solve a math problem. This would be another typical day in school if it weren't for the fact that the teacher is one of my 12 year old students.
We are a middle school that serves more than 500 students.
The majority of our population are made up of English Learners that also fall under the category of socioeconomically disadvantaged. They come from all walks of life. Some have parents working late into the night, requiring that they care for themselves and their siblings. Our school provides them with a place of solace and safety. Teachers are a dedicated bunch that give much of their time to ensure that our students are ready for high school and beyond.
My Project
I want to give students the ability to showcase their work in front of their peers. My students need more opportunities to teach one another. Having these large whiteboards will allow my students to break up into smaller groups and allow for more personal conversation. Not only will they be learning from each other, but they will also develop social skills. This will give me more time to work with students who are struggling and require individualized support. I also would like to see students be able to have engaging discussions with each other and having these whiteboards can develop presentation skills.
Students are the greatest teachers available to each other, but conversation is a lost art with the use of technology and social media.
Providing more opportunities for student-led discussions will empower them to be active and enthusiastic learners.
