My Students

I teach two 7th grade Gateway to Technology: Design and Modeling classes each semester. Through an increased effort, 28% of my students this semester are girls, who are often a minority in STEM courses. In our Design and Modeling class students learn how to sketch 3D models and build them on 3D modeling software like GeoGebra, Sketchup and Tinker. My students are very visual learners. We currently use linking cubes to create designs before building in our 3D software.

The greatest area of interest in my classroom is the lack of a 3D printer.

I have worked hard over the last 5 years to create an environment that allows students to design and create innovative solutions for the future. My students spend time on the computers designing using 3D modeling software but are limited in building their designs only using linking cubes or cardboard. The classroom lab is 5 years old and our original 3D printer was purchased through a grant. Last fall, the extruder broke and the new extruder continues to jam. Our 3D printer has been to 3 different repair locations and the last suggested it was time to purchase a new printer.

My Project

In my classroom learning is a hands-on, real world experience. When it comes to 3D modeling we are limited to cardboard and hot glue. My students use programs like sketchup, geogebra, and tinker to create 3D models. I want to help my students see their 3D designs come to life. After extensive research, I found the Dremel 3D printer is quiet, quick to set up, and frustration free printing.

A 3D printer will allow my students to print the 3D models THEY design through 3D modeling software.

They will be able to understand the design process, create their object, make changes, and then print a final product. This will help my students see the full production model we discuss in class.

The Dremel 3D printer also comes with additional lesson plans and online professional development so I can learn more ways to use printing in my classroom. Middle school students are visual and hands-on learners. This printer would help them bring their designs to life. This printer would help to bring real world learning to life.
