This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My second grade students are lower socioeconomic, second language learners eager to learn English and more about the world around them. One of the best ways that my students can acquire and master the English language is through reading passages and journaling their reactions to what they read. Unfortunately, very few of them have access to books in their homes, so my Library and my Writing Corners are popular places for my scholars to hang out.

it is very important to me that the entire environment of my learning centers is conducive to my students' learning-- visually, kinesthetically, and sensory!

My young students can be somewhat fidgety, and harnessing their energy into their learning is key to their mastery of a new language.

My Project

My English language learners can best master the English language through reading and journaling about what they read. Whether used in interactive small groups, partners, or individual practice, these visually appealing phonetic games will allow the students to acquire and practice the usage of important grade-level appropriate sight words, to construct elementary sentences, and eventually, to independently create paragraphs and even short stories. This all happens in my learning centers, where I need to add furniture.

Some of my second graders are kinesthetic learners, so the wobble chairs will enable them to focus on reading and writing as their bodies...well...wobble!

The comfy floor seats will be placed in my Library corner so my students can choose to sit and enjoy their books (I can't use the pillows I had there previously because of my district's new COVID protocols).
