Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Technology activities today often replace reading for enjoyment. My goal is to provide opportunities for my students to learn critical reading skills while enjoying the activities. The bottom line is that skill practice is a must, but it does not have to be boring!

My students are fifth graders in Texas.

Their reading levels range from a kindergarten level to beyond 7th grade. Even the kids that are good at reading don't always seem to enjoy it. The ones who struggle really don't enjoy it. Our school is a public school that has been open for 3 years. About one-third of our population is economically disadvantaged. My class is a part of a special education collaborative. Students who were previously in a "pull-out" program for much of their instruction are now kept in their grade-level classroom most of the day so that gaps can be closed by exposure to grade level standards and materials. These kids ESPECIALLY need activities that will build skills and confidence while being engaging and motivating.

My Project

I have requested an activity center for reading comprehension and some hot dots reading comprehension cards. Both products are fun and novel, making them engaging for the kids. Both also focus on specific skills that will improve students' reading abilities. Students will learn specific skills like main idea, cause and effect, sequencing, making inferences, etc. The goal is for the kids to grow in their love for reading while enhancing their ability to read! After all, reading is a life-long skill.

Not only are these the skills that good readers possess, these are also the skills tested in Texas at 5th grade.

My students MUST pass our state standardized test (TAKS) in order to be promoted to 6th grade. Providing a way for them to practice skills in a non-test format is so important for keeping morale high and for keeping kids motivated!
