My students are fifth graders in Texas. Their reading levels range from a kindergarten level to beyond 7th grade. Even the kids that are good at reading don't always seem to enjoy it. The ones who struggle really don't enjoy it. Our school is a public school that has been open for 3 years. About one-third of our population is economically disadvantaged. My class is a part of a special education collaborative. Students who were previously in a "pull-out" program for much of their instruction are now kept in their grade-level classroom most of the day so that gaps can be closed by exposure to grade level standards and materials. These kids ESPECIALLY need activities that will build skills and confidence while being engaging and motivating.
