Help me give my students lab equipment that will allow them to collect and analyze data on the carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrous oxide emissions from their vehicles.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This is my first year teaching at VHS and LAUSD. And this year I have been blessed with a really spectacular group of AP Environmental Science students. These AP Environmental Science students are the first kids I see in the morning (because they are oh so lucky to have SCIENCE first for period 1). And you would think these kids might be too lethargic, too quiet, too unmotivated in the morning to really get much out of our coursework- But nothing could be farther from the truth! This awesome group of kids comes in every morning with so much energy and drive that they keep me on my toes!
These AP Environmental Science students are always ready to dig into controversial debates over our environment, culture, and politics- always ready to analyze data and propose solutions for the critical issues of our time!
From debate teams to eco-column lab groups, these are the kind of kids you WANT to invest your time and energy into as we move forward as a society! And you can't help but be grateful and excited that these students hold our future in their hands.
My Project
Many of my AP Environmental Science students are passionate about the air quality in Los Angeles. Every day, they see the dirty brown photochemical smog sitting on top of the city. Because of this, I would like to invest time teaching about the chemical constituents of photochemical smog so that students can see exactly why smog is produced from car emissions, sunlight, and the release of VOCs (volatile organic compounds). And more importantly, I want students to see the realistic and manageable solutions we can all easily incorporate into our driving to help mitigate this problem!
By donating to this project and helping fund lab equipment for our classroom, you will help students better visualize the chemical constituents of our Los Angeles photochemical smog.
You will also help students to see how far cars have come in reducing their emissions since the 1970's Clean Air Act AND the steps we can further take to make the air quality even better for our children.
