This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school in San Bernardino County. The district is slowly starting to invest in their choral programs, and our school’s choral program is growing in strength. Most of my students have little to no prior musical training because our middle schools didn’t offer choir until this school year. Current and past students perform regularly in school concerts, but also perform for local assisted living homes, community events, and athletic events. They all receive music theory training, and leave prepared to audition for higher level studies in choral vocal education.

My Project

Ukuleles are great instruments for novice students with little to no background in music. Because there are only 4 strings, they are much easier and cost effective to play than a guitar. My general music students perform in class, but they are limited to using elementary percussion instruments because our school does not own any ukuleles, nor is there a budget for them. While I won’t be able to supply a ukulele for every student, these will be available to those students who want a bigger challenge than playing a boomwhacker or indefinite pitch percussion instrument. They will be used throughout the school year by general music and choir students who want to accompany themselves for solo or group projects.
