My Students

My students are special because they come from a diverse background, seven languages are represented in my classroom. We function like a family in an environment that promotes positive social interactions around respect, responsibility, and safe behaviors.

We embody the Hawaiian values of aloha, malama, kuleana, and kokua.

We care for one another and promote kindness to everyone and focus on our responsibility to our community and island. My students work hard, they have a growth mindset that drives them to want to reach their goals and they encourage their peers to do the same. They are curious, excited about learning and love school, so much that they are sad when it is the weekend.

When I asked them why they love school, most of them said it is because of science. My students enjoy integrated lessons that are cross-curricular including reading, writing, and STEM. I hope to enhance their love of learning and encourage them to continue to be interested in the world around us.

My Project

When I was a second grader, I remember my teacher would give students tickets for good behavior, that we could redeem for prizes at the student store. This was one of my most favorite memories of second grade. I would like to create memories with my students by creating a student store that will teach financial literacy and motivate positive behaviors. I tell my students that their job or responsibility is to learn in school. I will reward my students with money each time I see them performing our General Learner Outcomes or Na Hopena A'o, which are our statewide student learning expectations that focus on, character, behavior, excellence, and social skills. Learning to count bills and coins can be a complicated skill for second graders. Students will learn how to exchange coins for bills, make purchases at the store, and learn how to give back change.

By creating a student store, my students will learn financial literacy and be motivated to be responsible learners.

I am requesting plastic play money and bills, money matching practice games, fun pencils, stickers, book markers, small toys, and snacks to help create the student store. Students will use their fake money they receive to purchase fun items and incentives at the student store. This project will teach students how to count money as well as promote positive behaviors and learning.
