This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Working as a reading intervention teacher, I work with students who need extra support on their reading and writing skills. Even as adults we know that working on something difficult isn't always fun. So, as much as we want students to learn just for the sake of learning, sometimes there has to be an external reward in order for them to be motivated to focus and persevere.
In my experience, I have found that a classroom financial literacy system is an incredibly useful tool when motivating students to learn.
My students have the opportunity to earn class cash every day by staying on task, answering and asking questions, and helping others. Then, each month I hold a student store where they can "spend" their cash. I love being able to watch them go shopping, figure out how much class cash they will need to pay me, and determine if the change I gave them was correct. I even have students who save up for months to purchase a bigger item they really want!
