Students who are struggling readers and disinterested in literature must be enticed to read inside and outside of the classroom. My students asked for new books and supplies for visual summarizing in small group classroom assignments and one-pager creative reports after independent reading time.
My students live in a low-income area, and many do not have the support they need from home to focus in the classroom.
These supplies and books will help students comprehend and remember what they are reading or have read and entice a variety of visual and creative learners to focus in the classroom.
I work with three classes of students, most of which have below grade-level reading skills. At least ten of my students every year have special needs and/or low reading comprehension skills. All the options and support they get will greatly empower them to succeed and reach their reading and learning goals.
My Project
My students will work in small groups and independently to find a creative way to retell their stories! Students thrive on collaborative learning experiences. Groups can work together to summarize passages from class novels. Higher level students can peer mentor readers who are struggling. After independent reading time, students will also use these supplies to complete projects and one-pager book report to share their ideas creatively. Many students in my classes love to draw, so this will help spark their creativity. If students ask me for supplies to read and draw for class projects, I am going to take full advantage of the opportunity to get them excited about reading!
