Student Space to Keep Up the Pace (of Literacy Activities)
My students need reading and writing games to gain independence in the classroom, therefore maximizing their time and space. Can-Do games will allow my students to experience autonomy in various spaces in the classroom.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Shepro's classroom raised $560

My Students
I have 22 vivacious learners in my classroom. At our school, students from diverse backgrounds come together to learn. My students have a variety of interests including singing, dancing, reading, exploring, and doing science. My students face great challenges in coming to school. Many of my students receive free or reduced price lunch, and most come from Worcester, MA. Worcester is an old industrial city which is the second largest city in Massachusetts. My students do not live in ideal circumstances. I hope to empower my students through education.
In the words of Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
My students are able to work independently, producing quality work, while I rotate with small reading groups. Our school uses a way to teaching reading and writing called Daily 5. This model of teaching and learning is incredibly effective. However, the students get very antsy during this lengthy block of time. It’s difficult for a six- or seven-year-old to sit still and read or write.
My Project
This project will give my students the opportunity to enjoy literacy through the use of student-led, independent spaces in our classroom. The Can-Do games allow students to take ownership of their own learning by running their own small group game centers throughout the classroom.
The Lakeshore Quickies sets will afford students further independence throughout the classroom by making the facilitation of fun and engaging games simple.
Overall, the games and activities that I am requesting will help my students utilize our classroom space in a fun and productive way that will feel like fun and promote a fierce lifelong love of learning.
Through helping to fund this project, you are helping my students gain confidence through independent work while they greatly improve their literacy and phonics skills.
