Student-Selected Reading!

My students need independent reading books to keep them engaged. These titles are all books they personally selected. When students can choose their own books, they improve literacy and want to continue to read for pleasure!

My Students

I teach sophomores and seniors in a high poverty school district in Spartanburg, SC. Despite the many obstacles that they must overcome, my students are kind, thoughtful, and full of energy.

My students are from different backgrounds and life experiences, yet we all come together in English class as one.

These students want to learn and grow, which makes me excited every day to come to work!

My current challenge is to find literature that is both appealing and challenging for each student.

My Project

My students enjoy reading, especially when THEY can choose what they read. This self-selection process is such an important step in literacy and reading for pleasure, even as they grow into adulthood.

When students get to select what they read for themselves, they actually grow as readers.

I asked all of my sophomores to list out books that they would like to read, and the listed books are those choices. They will read these books independently, while we are continuing to work on additional materials within the classroom.

It's so exciting to see high school students who want to read and grow in their literacy. Readers are leaders!
