My Students
Our students are readers and explorers. Their excitement to read engaging books is clear. They also love to make and create. Our students are artists. They are very active. We want to give our students opportunities to authentically share their learning. Our student population is diverse. Our population breakdown is 26.7% African American, 26.3% Hispanic/Latino, 30.8% White, and 11.5% two or more races. 63.4% of our students are economically disadvantaged. 12.4% of our students have disabilities. 26.1% of our students have limited English proficiency. Students in kindergarten and first grade learn half their day in English and half of their day in Spanish.
Our students are very active, intelligent, creative, and determined.
Each year, we will add another grade of dual language immersion (DLI) classes until there is at least one section of DLI within each grade level. Finally, we are a nationally recognized Welcoming School, and we intentionally teach ally behavior especially by supporting the LGBT community and individuals.
My Project
Our students deserve representation in the books they read. Please help us purchase diverse books. Students of all races need books that represent our school. Books also feature empowering LGBTQ-IA characters and topics.
Students deserve the most up-to-date and fun books.
Many students cannot afford new books. Please help fill our library with books students want to read. Diverse books support empathy, growth, and representation.
We are a Welcoming School. The library shelves should be full of books that represent students of all different identifications. We want books to show us who we are and who are our classmates are. We no longer want LGBTQ-IA books to be rare in our schools: they should be commonplace among all our students' reading choices.
Finally, we have students whose first language is Spanish: they also deserve books that represent their language. I selected authentic and award-winning books in Spanish, along with popular English translated texts. Please help us have the best books for Spanish speakers and our students learning Spanish.
