Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have a special place in my heart, and play a big role in my life. They are they reason I still teach, and why I will continue to teach this population. My students are amazing young adults, who struggle with managing their emotions due to troubled pasts, their home environments, and other factors. Despite all of their challenges, both behaviroally and academically they shine with the right type of support, and expectations. All my students want to do well, but they believe they cannot because they have been told that their whole lives.
What I love most about my students, is their tenancity.
Everyday they get up, and come to school knowing that today may not be an easy day. Many things are difficult for my students (social interactions, decision making, grade level academics, handling conflict, etc). However, they want to do better, and strive to be the person we believe them to be.
My Project
Our student-run snack window is in need of some updated/new materials and equipment. We are a classroom of high school juniors, and seniors with intellectual and social-emotional disabilities. A major part of our class is learning workplace skills through our student run snack window in which we operate during lunch time. At this time, we are in need of a new warmer and other basic supplies to keep us up and running efficiently.
By donating to this project, you are ensuring my students continue to learn the workplace skills needed to transition into adulthood.
My students learn how to use basic fast food equipment, customer service, professionalism, collaboration, and problem-solving so that they can be contributing members in their communities. Currently, we are in a need of a replacement warmer as ours no longer works. This is essential to our business in order to meet the health code standards. Students prep food, and safely store them in the warmer for service.
Other materials we are requesting are needed to safely run our business. Kitchen anti-slip mats, and a pump to safely distribute cleaning chemicals.
