Student Requested: Comfortable Space to Increase Literacy
My students need rugs and pillows for reading! They are uncomfortable on our hard floors, or in their old desks, and have requested more of their favorite books as well!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is SO lively! A majority of my students are more than two grade levels behind in literacy. I have students who want to learn and make a difference for their future. Their dedication keeps me going! I would love for 90% to be proficient readers by the end of this school year!
My students are the biggest group of loving, caring, sweethearts you have ever met!
I know many teachers probably say the same about their kiddos, but these kiddos offer everything they have, despite having so little themselves. Our class is comprised of Latino (with one exception), inner-city children who come from varied backgrounds and hardships. Due to the awesome skill of being dual language learners, and some with parents who don't speak English, they struggle with being proficient readers or fully mastering either language. Our school is low income and we face the struggles that come with that. Low operating budgets, low/no funds for extras, and no full library or gym. However, what we do have our staff uses to our full advantage and come to work everyday to fight for these children and their education. I am teaching my children every day that we can be something different than what the outside world expects of us. I am amazed by these fourth graders' will to achieve every day!
My Project
I have created a unique setting for a fourth grade classroom. Our desks are arranged in a square around the room leaving a large open space in the middle. This allows for full class discussion and easy access as the teacher to all of my students. Our classroom is often found in lively discussions and these intuitive kids bring up a lot more than your everyday Math/Reading/Science! Recently, I began to talk to my students about why they moan so much when it's time to read independently for their small groups. FINALLY, after over nine weeks of school someone was willing to speak up! They don't have a comfortable spot to read! They do not like reading at their desks or on the hard old floors in our schools. I decided the open space in the middle of the desks would be the perfect safe space to create a comfortable and accessible reading area! My students are so excited about this idea and wanted it done today! Anything that encourages more reading in our classroom will be a great benefit!
As mentioned previously, a majority of my students are behind in reading.
As teachers we are supported by any idea that may help our students grow to be proficient readers. This space will provide a safe and comfortable space for these kids to read without judgment and provide more enjoyment for them as they press their limits daily! Giving my students a place they want for reading will encourage development and help improve their lives by producing literate scholars for years to come!
