One day my 23-year-old son came by my first grade classroom to see me and looked in to see my students busy working on laptop computers. He asked me "What grade do you teach?" and was amazed to see these first graders working on PowerPoint projects on the computer. This past school year my class did a great deal of work on computers. The students did individual and group PowerPoint projects, individual and group reports, and individual and group publishing. I want to expand on this and have the students keep an individual portfolio of their computer work on individual Flash Drives. The students will be able to take these portfolios home at the end of the school year by transferring the data to CDs. I would be able to use the Flash Drives each school year. I teach first grade and my 15 students loved working on the laptop computers this past school year. The students saved their work to a school common drive and their work was often compromised. The individual Flash Drives would enable them to keep their work in a secure manner. My school has 58% free and reduced lunch and has a large Hispanic population. Most of my students would not be able to afford to buy this technology. The Flash Drives would enable them to to have a workable means of keeping up with their individual computer work. My first grade students are our future and technology will be an integral part of their future. To see them work with this technology is an extremely positive experience that these students can share with their families through their portfolio.
