My husband and I started the Student News Crew Club at our school. Our school district is part of a low-income community, where all the students receive free breakfast and free lunch. They are talented students who have the potential to strive and be productive citizens in the future.
Our goal is show our students how a single voice can have the power to convey a message.
The majority of our students come from single parent households. They have had to grow up fast, and in some cases have additional responsibilities with younger siblings. We want our students to be part of a group where they can feel comfortable and confident in sharing their ideas and learn positive communication techniques.
The goal of the Student News Crew Club is for our students to have the opportunity to communication important information school-wide. Coming from a low-income community, simple things such as what they are going to have for lunch is important to them. Having a camera to film student news crew broadcasts will enable our students to share this type of information with the students and staff.
Our students in the Student News Crew Club are learning important elements of communication and journalism.
Students in this club want to show their community they are most than just a test score. We have students that are future news anchors, editors, directors, actors, and scene writers.
