Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Contemplating the start of school can be stressful for teachers and students alike. The challenge for the students is to come prepared and motivated. I would like to give my students assistance in this area. Random acts of kindness like a free pencil may be the boost they need.
My students attend a Northern California High School in a city containing 6 High Schools.
It is a relatively diverse community and approximately 60% of the students are receiving a free lunch. My students range in grade level from 9 through 12th grade. The classes I teach comprise all levels of learners that include second language and special education students.
My Project
I'm planning on using the pencils as a motivational tool. I recently attended a workshop where I witnessed a classroom motivational model whereby students received a reward for an accomplishment in class. It could simply be for sitting quietly in their seat when required, for completing a particular part of their assignment in the time prescribed, for helping another student without being requested too, etc., the possibilities are endless. While these preferred activities are happening the teacher quietly stops by and presents the pencel without a word to the student. I observed this to be a powerful motivational strategy. The stamps and stamp pads will help me to provide further positive feedback. The audio tools will help me to surprise them with a variety of attention grabbing sounds and allow them to hear me better as our class sizes continue to grow.
It is a struggle every day to keep students engaged and motivated.
It is so important for teachers to have strategies to accomplish this. Having some tools to aid in this task can be extremely valuable.
