Our school is a youth-led high school. It is the first youth-initiated charter high school in the country. We foster a sense of belonging and community for our youth and their families who come from many different backgrounds and languages. Our students are motivated to transform their lives and their communities. Over 90% of our youth will be the first in their family to go to college.
Our students are resilient beyond measure and have demonstrated their will power to achieve their dreams in the heart of East Oakland.
Despite the violence and poverty found in our community our students work hard and have high expectations of themselves and one another. Our students also hold and lift each other up, intentionally building community.
Sadly, two students at our school passed away this year. They were each strong amazing individuals and brought so much light to our community.
We want to use art to remember and honor the students we have lost and create a space for healing.
We intend on using the requested spray paint and other supplies to create a visual that will help us heal and remember those we lost for years to come. This mural will be located behind our healing garden which will help beautify and define the purpose of the space for our community.
Having spray paint will allow us to make something colorful and the masks and tarps will ensure that we are safe and only get paint where we intend for it to go.
