This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are bright, thoughtful and hardworking. The majority are first-generation students who are enthusiastic, interesting, and full of life.

Our school is located in a low poverty/working class neighborhood, and lacks some of the resources other school communities take for granted.

There are issues with crime, gang and drug violence, deportation, and sex trafficking yet students come to school each day eager to learn and to make their families proud. They are constantly inspiring me and others to be our best selves.

My Project

Jimmy Santiago Baca has a background that is in many ways similar to the background of my students. He tells the story of his youth and young adulthood in an intensely personal and profound ways that I know my students will be engaged by.

Every year in my 10th grade classes, my student write their own memoirs after reading a memoir by a published author.

"A Place to Stand" will be a huge inspiration to them, and is likely to get students hooked on reading in a way that many of them haven't experienced before.

Through reading this book, and writing their own stories, students will have a memorable and powerful literacy experience.
