This year, after reading Donalyn Miller’s book, The Book Whisperer we focused heavily on reading engagement with our 4th graders. We worked hard to build a community of readers, to give students choice in what they read, and to build intrinsic reading motivation. Many afternoons our students curled up in a cozy spot and got lost in their books. We brought our own books and shared our love of reading with them too. It is so powerful for kids to see their adults and teachers reading alongside them. They begged for more reading time and eagerly tracked the books they finished. We are blown away by the growth we saw in our students, both their love of reading and their academic progress. Every single student grew – many by multiple grade levels. We are so excited to continue in our effort to build lifetime readers. It is our hope to purchase books this summer to stock our classroom library so every reader has a wide variety of books to reflect their interests. We also recently completed a classroom library equity audit with our students to ensure that they are all represented in the books we put in front of them. We appreciate you checking out our Donor’s Choose and thank you in advance for any contributions you make. We love being educators and know that this project will have a huge impact on our amazing students.
