My Students

I teach in a school that is mostly poverty. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. Some have never been exposed to a school setting prior to entering my Kindergarten classroom.

Most of my students are from low-income, high poverty homes.

Our school is greatly dependent on the free and reduced federal lunch program with most of students qualifying. My students are very hard workers and have a ton of potential to create some amazing things given the opportunity regardless of their home-lives.

My Project

A morning meeting consists of 5 components: message, greeting, reading, sharing, and activity. It’s a time set aside to have conversations with the class that you otherwise wouldn’t have time for. It also allows for a time in the day when the teacher can let go, play, and have fun with the class during greetings and team building activities. Teachers and students connect in ways that are not possible during the school day.

Morning meeting is THE FOUNDATION of everything that happens in our classroom.

The academics, the relationships, the behaviors, the fun. It all is built on morning meeting. The reason this time of day is so important is simple: It’s all about building COMMUNITY. By focusing on the community in our classroom, the students know they belong to something special and that they are valued as unique individuals. This sense of belonging helps behaviors, helps engagement and creates the family in our classroom. We will be using the early learning station during our morning meeting time.
