This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

On our campus and community, students are struggling with mental wellness and building connections with their peers and community. They struggle to make friends and build bonds with those around them.

My students are ready to make an impact on campus through a community service project and create opportunities for positive interactions among students.

To start their project, students will use the materials requested to organize and put together wellness bags to later hand out to students throughout our campus, not just those in our classroom. The bags will be filled with brightly colored post its, vibrant pens, highlighters and other wellness items. The other wellness items include a small amount of kinetic sand enclosed in a backpack friendly container that can easily be accessed in times of stress or anxiety. Students will also be using the pla filament requested to print out sensory friendly fidget toys like clickers and spinners in our school's print lab. Fidgets like these have been found to be very helpful during overwhelming times in or out of the classroom. These printed fidgets will be placed in every wellness bag. Once the bags are put together, students will use the paint pens to decorate the bags with kind words or uplifting drawings. To determine who the wellness bags will be distributed, students will take charge by surveying the campus during several lunch periods and look for students that seem in need of friendship or interaction. They will look for students that need a friendly "hello" or "hey!". Students will later return on a different day to hand out a wellness bag to these students they previously recognized as needing friendly interaction. Students are ready to create and lead this activity to create positive interactions and help uplift students' wellness throughout our campus.
