My students need a mini fridge, microwave and a Nespresso machine as an incentive to work on the morning show, newspaper and yearbook during their lunch period.
My students are motivated and willing to learn all that they can about the journalism profession. My school is home to three publications and a media program. My school is fifty-five percent minority and more than half are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.
My students want to create the best publications possible.
They stay late and come to school early. They cover sports, school events, on-campus news and localized global topics to our school. The journalism program has won countless awards. The yearbook was a finalist and the online news site won the National Scholastic Press Association Pacemaker award in 2016.
My Project
The students in my classes work on their publications daily and most work during lunch. The purchase of a mini fridge, microwave and coffee machine would offer an incentive to a student who would like to work during lunch or after school. I asked the students what they would like to see in the journalism room and they chose these three things.
The coffee machine would provide a sweet treat for students when we work on spreads, news packages or newspaper pages.
We can use the machine to sip on a latte when we do a gallery walk or critique each others' work during class.
