My Project
Like many of my high school colleagues, I am starting to see more clearly the negative impact that online schooling during COVID had on my students' academic and social skills. As a language arts teacher, I know how important it is for students to have a strong vocabulary and a strong background knowledge, both of which benefit their reading comprehension and their writing abilities. I also know firsthand that students are having to relearn how to interact with their peers. My project includes two main components. 1) Surround the kids with literature that gets them reading and keeps them reading. 2) Place the students in literary partners/groups in which they will get to share with peers what they have been reading and collaborate with peers in responding to teacher-created prompts. The key to all of this is the high-interest literature. Every student must be able to contribute to the discussion, which means every student must be reading a novel.
