Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The skill of looking up words and finding multiple meanings in graphic detail fascinate young children! My student population has very limited English skills and vocabulary knowledge! A classroom set of Dictionaries and Thesauruses will be a memorable life experience they will not easily forget!
This classroom is in the oldest school in our community (1930's), with the highest need (80% free/reduced lunch; 80% English Language Learners).
Yet, they are so excited and eager to learn, as young second graders should be! Most do not have computers at home, and have not been exposed to much English vocabulary. The wonders of new words and colorful descriptions excite them. This request will enrich them deeply!
My Project
California standards require this grade level to acquire the fundamental skill of dictionary and thesaurus research. They are to learn antonyms and synonyms both in their vocabulary and written work. The selected resource has BOTH a Dictionary AND Thesaurus in one book, complete with colorful pictures and HARDCOVER to be used over and over for years! With the budget cuts these students will never be able to utilize such a resource! The ability to look up YOUR OWN words and synonyms is a priceless learning experience!
English learners have a very limited vocabulary.
Low socio-economic households are equally exposed to a limited ability of expression. Developing the skill to access the tool necessary to overcome this gap requires "hands-on" practice. A simple Dictionary and Thesaurus helps to give these young kids that extra boost for success!
