Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The Dugan Student Council needs a digital camera to help us save our high school memories! We'd love to make bulletin boards and post pictures of our activities on our school web site, but we need a more convenient camera! Once we get the technology, we could even start working on a yearbook. I teach English here at Dugan Alternative High School, and I am also the Student Council moderator. The school serves kids from the southside of Chicago who deal with problems such as gang affiliations, pregnancy, incarceration, poverty, and drug addictions. These are high risk students who have been kicked out of or dropped from other high schools, but they have all independently chosen to come back to school and give themselves a second chance at education. The kids in Student Council wake up early to meet with me on Wednesday mornings. They are incredible students with a love for our tiny school and the people in it. They organize everything from the Halloween Haunted Hayride, to the Christmas Dance, to Singing Telegrams in February. They help fundraise year round to help send some of our students abroad in the spring. They help make our school home to us all. It is a better place to be because of the Student Council's hard work! We are asking a donor to buy us a digital camera! We would use this camera to publish pictures to the school web-site and to capture memories we make as a school. The Student Council is made up of approximately 15 students, and they would use the camera during school events. The camera will help the students gain excitement about upcoming events and to help them remember their times here at Dugan. These are the greatest kids in the world and they deserve it more than anyone! Thank You!
