My Project

We are making some adjustments to this semester's curriculum in the interest of improving student engagement, and I would really like to give my students the opportunity for a novel study of Elie Wiesel's memoir. Currently, few of my students enjoy reading or have even read an actual book in recent memory, and they often struggle with executive skills working independently. Reading together as a class, along with relevant discussions and projects, would likely capture students' attention because it's something different than what they are used to in their current setting. I would like to provide each student with an individual copy of the book to check out during our unit of study.

Elie Wiesel's memoir Night is not only one of my favorites to teach but is also a student favorite based on my teaching experience.

Its themes - including silence, prejudice, belief, and family bonds - are extremely applicable to society today and subsequently students' experience. Moreover, the Holocaust is a pivotal event in history and one that we can still learn much from today. This novel study would not only allow students to develop their reading comprehension and literary analysis skills but would also connect to other subjects like world history, pique their interest in history and culture, and facilitate difficult yet necessary academic discussions about tolerance and hate.
