My students need laptops to practice their computer programming skills and learn new ones. I want to prepare my students for the future. Who knows what they can and will create in the years to come.
I work with gifted math students that are ready to learn. My students are creative, thoughtful and full of questions! They absolutely love hands-on, active, engaging projects and challenges that allow them to think outside the box to find solutions! They come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. They are amazing!
Last year I attended a training on computer science instruction.
I really enjoyed it and brought it right back to my students. They are obsessed with learning to write computer programs. The students have quickly picked up the skills taught throughout the lessons. It has been fantastic. The children were even able to teach their parents a little coding at our spring conference night. The one problem we keep running into is lack of computers. My school has over 800 students and there just aren't enough computers to go around. As a result we haven't been able to complete as many lessons as I would like and as the students would like.
My Project
With our own set of laptops my gifted math students will have the opportunity to learn and enhance their computer programming knowledge on a weekly basis. I will use the leading curriculum for K-12 computer science at code.org. Their lessons are designed for each grade level, building on skills previously mastered.
The vision is that every student in every school has the opportunity to learn computer science, just like biology, chemistry or algebra.
With the addition of these computers that vision can become a reality.
Along with computer programming the laptops will be used to enhance our math lessons and provide more specialized practice with the skills taught in our daily curriculum. The students will have the opportunity to find the area and perimeter, recognize quadrilaterals, determine how much time has elapsed, and many more. Thank you for considering our project.
