My 2nd-grade students are an amazing group of children from a very diverse inner-city school in MA. They love learning. They love coming to school each day, and I love being able to teach them. Many of my students face incredible challenges each and every day, yet they come to school with an open heart and an open mind. So much of what we do in our day-to-day, both inside and outside of school, is all for our students. From spending our own money to asking for support from families and local programs. It is an honor to be able to do this job each and every day, and I just want to provide my students with as many opportunities as I can, because they don't often get that outside of school. My Project
I was recently certified in Trauma Informed Yoga for youth, and it was one of the best decisions I have made as a teacher. We are in the midst of really trying times. Educators are exhausted and trauma is spiraling out of control from this pandemic. I try to incorporate yoga into my classroom each day, and I have done that for years. It has been an amazing experience for my students. I want to be able to up my game and use everything I have taken from such an incredible course and provide support to my students who are either going through some type of trauma now or will certainly come out of this with some trauma and be in dire need of emotional healing. Teaching can no longer just be about academics. Business as usual is no longer where our heads and hearts need to be. Happy, healthy, kiddos sitting in front of us will be much better off in their daily learning experience if we can support them with all that we have. We will use these yoga and mindfulness materials every day in our mindful breaks, our yoga practice and our every day teaching experiences. We have some things already, but grasping anything we can to help us improve our quality of life during such hard times would be a priceless gift. I thank you for loving our kiddos from afar, as much as we do in person.
